Color fonts have been around for a while, but it wasn't until the success of Emoji character sets that operating systems and apps began to care about them. Apple took the lead with their Apple Color Emoji font, and Google followed suit with a similar solution. Windows 8.1 now supports color fonts, which could be the future of typography.
